Gov. Roy Cooper has set the schedule for the special election in the 3rd Congressional District — and the process begins next week.
The election is to fill the seat formerly held by U.S. Rep. Walter Jones, who passed away after an extended illness. The district cover most of coastal North Carolina.
Here’s the schedule:
Filing begins March 4 and will last until March 8.
The special primary will be held April 30, with early voting starting March 15.
If necessary, a runoff primary will be held July 9. In that case, the special general election would be held September 10.
A candidate needs to garner 30% of the vote to avoid a runoff. If this happens, the special general election would be held July 9.
This schedule does not necessarily apply to the 9th Congressional District, which is also heading to a special election. The State Board of Elections still needs to schedule that one.
