McCrae Dowless indicted in 9th Congressional District election fraud investigation

The Bladen County political operative who organized the absentee-by-mail ballot program that upended the 9th Congressional District race has now been indicted for his role in the campaign.

McCrae Dowless faces charges of felonious obstruction of justice, two counts of conspiracy to commit obstruction of justice and two counts of possession of absentee ballot, according to media reports.

Dowless was arrested Wednesday and has a court appearance scheduled in Wake County in March.

The State Board of Elections ordered a new election in the 9th Congressional District after four days of testimony into alleged absentee by mail ballot fraud. However, the elections board had no authority to hold a criminal investigation.

Wake County DA Lorrin Freeman had been conducting that investigation. More indictments are possible.
