Filing for 9th Congressional District special election starts March 11

The official filing period for the 9th Congressional District special election, and candidates have already started lining up.

This special election was called after allegations of absentee-by-mail ballot fraud tainted the results of last November’s contest between Republican Mark Harris and Democrat Dan McCready. Libertarian Jeff Scott also appeared on the ballot.

Harris had appeared to win a 900-vote victory, but the State Board of Elections found evidence that an operative on his campaign illegally harvested ballots.

The special election filing period begins March 11 and runs through March 15.

The special primary will be held May 14.

If no candidate reaches 30% of the vote, a runoff primary will be held September 10 and the general election on November 5.

If no runoff is needed, the general election will be held September 10.

The dates for the 9th Congressional District are on a similar timeline as the special election in the 3rd Congressional District, held after the death of U.S. Rep. Walter Jones.
